UPS Sort and Air Recovery Facility

Mc Gowan served as General Contractor for the 40,000 square foot expansion of United Parcel Service’s Small Sort and Air Recovery Facility in Edison, NJ.

The ground-up project encompassed construction of concrete footing and retaining wall foundations, erection of a two-story structural steel building, exterior brick walls and interior concrete block walls, an EPDM metal deck room system, seventeen loading docks, exterior concrete surface pads for docked trucks, structural concrete floor slabs for the ground floor and the mezzanine level, and all new MEP systems.

The project team staged construction activities around the needs of the existing UPS facility that operates 24-hours per day. A phased schedule and a detailed logistics plan ensured the excavation work, materials storage and deliveries wouldn’t interfere with critical UPS truck movement. Mc Gowan closely coordinated deliveries and personnel access with UPS security staff.

Construction of the floor slabs, interiors and building systems required zero tolerance for dimension discrepancy to ensure compatibility with a highly complex conveyor system, which was later installed inside the new building. The project involved numerous long-lead items such as roof trusses and other steel elements, lighting fixtures and specialized equipment.
